What is Commercial Catering ACS?

Commercial Catering ACS provides a recognised assessment route for gas engineers working with gas-fired catering appliances and equipment in commercial and non-domestic environments.

Commercial catering environments can include restaurants, cafés, hotels, pubs, schools, hospitals, care facilities, food production environments and other professional kitchens.

Working on commercial catering equipment requires specific competencies because the appliances, installation requirements and working environments can differ significantly from those found in domestic kitchens.

Our 4-day Commercial Catering ACS package brings together core commercial catering gas safety with three specialist appliance competencies:

  • CCCN1 - Core Commercial Catering Gas Safety

  • COMCAT1 - Catering Appliances

  • COMCAT3 - Forced Draught Burners

  • COMCAT5 - Gas-Fired Catering Appliances

What's included in the Commercial Catering ACS Package?

CCCN1 – Core Commercial Catering Gas Safety

CCCN1 is the Core Commercial Catering Gas Safety competency.

It provides the fundamental knowledge and competence required for engineers working with commercial catering gas installations and appliances.

The core assessment covers areas such as commercial catering gas safety, relevant legislation and industry requirements, appliance operation, controls, ventilation, flueing, combustion and dealing with unsafe situations.

CCCN1 provides the foundation for undertaking additional commercial catering ACS categories.

COMCAT1 – Commercial Catering Appliances

COMCAT1 covers the installation, commissioning, servicing, repair and breakdown of relevant commercial catering appliances.

This category is relevant to engineers working on gas-fired catering equipment found in professional kitchens and commercial food preparation environments.

Commercial catering appliances can differ considerably from domestic cooking appliances in terms of size, gas input, controls, installation requirements and ventilation arrangements.

COMCAT3 – Forced Draught Burners

COMCAT3 covers relevant forced draught burners used on commercial catering appliances.

Forced draught systems use a fan or other mechanical means to provide combustion air to the burner and are commonly found on larger or more sophisticated commercial catering equipment.

The competency is relevant to engineers who need to install, commission, service, repair and diagnose faults on equipment incorporating these types of burners.

COMCAT5 – Gas-Fired Catering Appliances

COMCAT5 covers specific gas-fired commercial catering appliances and the associated installation, commissioning, servicing, repair and breakdown competencies.

It provides an additional commercial catering appliance competency alongside COMCAT1, allowing engineers to broaden the range of catering equipment they can work on.

The exact appliance scope covered by each ACS category is important, so engineers should ensure the categories they hold match the equipment and work they undertake.

Who is this Commercial Catering ACS course for?

This course is designed for experienced gas engineers who want to develop their competence in commercial catering gas work.

It may be suitable for engineers who:

Looking to start a career in commercial catering engineering?

If you're looking to start a career in commercial catering equipment engineering rather than gain ACS certification as an experienced gas engineer, our Commercial Catering Equipment Technician Apprenticeship could be a better option.

The apprenticeship provides a structured route into the commercial catering engineering industry, combining practical training with workplace experience and the knowledge and skills needed to work with commercial catering equipment.

It's particularly suited to new and developing engineers who want to build a career in the industry rather than undertake an ACS assessment as an experienced gas professional.
