What is Commercial ACS?

Commercial ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) provides a recognised way for experienced gas engineers to demonstrate their competence to work on specific types of non-domestic gas appliances, installations and systems.

Commercial gas work can involve larger appliances, pipework, heating systems and more complex installation environments than those typically found in domestic properties.

As a result, engineers need the appropriate commercial competencies for the work they undertake.

Our Commercial ACS package combines core commercial gas safety, commercial pipework installation and two commercial heating appliance categories into one 5-day programme.

The package includes:

  • COCN1 - Core Commercial Gas Safety

  • ICPN1 - Installation First Fix of Commercial Pipework

  • CIGA1 - Commercial Indirect-Fired Heating Appliances

  • CORT1 - Commercial Overhead Radiant Heaters

What's included in the Commercial ACS Package?

COCN1 – Core Commercial Gas Safety

COCN1 is the Core Commercial Gas Safety assessment and provides the fundamental commercial gas safety competency required before undertaking many other commercial ACS categories.

The assessment covers the principles and practices required for safe work on commercial gas installations, including relevant gas safety requirements, appliance operation, controls, flueing, ventilation and unsafe situations.

COCN1 provides the core competency from which additional commercial ACS categories can be undertaken.

ICPN1 – Installation First Fix of Commercial Pipework

ICPN1 covers the installation of commercial gas pipework at first-fix stage.

This competency is relevant to engineers involved in installing commercial gas pipework as part of non-domestic gas installations.

ICPN1 is a specific pipework installation competency. Additional ACS categories, such as TPCP1 or TPCP1A, cover testing and purging of commercial installation pipework and are not included in this package.

CIGA1 – Commercial Indirect-Fired Heating Appliances

CIGA1 covers the installation, commissioning, servicing, repair and breakdown of commercial indirect-fired heating appliances and equipment.

This competency is particularly relevant to engineers working with commercial heating plant, including indirect-fired commercial boilers and associated heating equipment.

CIGA1 is one of the principal commercial heating ACS categories available alongside other categories such as direct-fired appliances and overhead radiant heaters.

CORT1 – Commercial Overhead Radiant Heaters

CORT1 covers the installation, commissioning, servicing, repair and breakdown of gas-fired commercial overhead luminous radiant plaque and radiant tube heaters.

These heating systems are commonly used to provide space heating in larger commercial and industrial environments, including warehouses, workshops and other high-ceiling buildings.

CORT1 is a commercial heating competency and should not be confused with commercial catering ACS categories.

Who is this Commercial ACS course for?

This Commercial ACS package is designed for experienced gas engineers who want to develop or demonstrate competence in commercial gas work.

It may be suitable for engineers who:

  • Want to expand their existing gas engineering skills into commercial work
  • Work on or want to work on commercial heating systems
  • Need commercial gas ACS competencies for their role
  • Want to broaden the range of commercial gas work they can undertake
  • Work in commercial property maintenance or facilities management
  • Are looking to work on commercial heating installations, pipework or overhead radiant heating systems
  • Already have relevant gas industry experience and are progressing into commercial gas engineering

If you're currently a domestic gas engineer looking to move into commercial gas work, please speak to our training team before booking so we can confirm the appropriate route and entry requirements for your circumstances.

What will I learn?

The course combines commercial gas theory, practical knowledge and assessment preparation relevant to the four ACS categories included in the package.

Topics covered can include:

  • Commercial gas safety
  • Gas legislation and industry requirements
  • Commercial appliance operation
  • Gas safety devices and controls
  • Commercial appliance installation requirements
  • Commercial flueing and ventilation
  • Gas combustion and combustion analysis
  • Commercial gas pipework installation
  • First-fix commercial pipework
  • Commercial heating systems
  • Indirect-fired commercial heating appliances
  • Commercial overhead radiant heating

Looking for Domestic ACS training instead?

If you work primarily on domestic gas appliances and heating systems, our Commercial ACS package may not be the right course for you.

Our Domestic ACS Training & Assessment Package is designed for gas engineers looking to gain or renew domestic ACS competencies, including CCN1, CENWAT and CKR1.

Our Domestic ACS package is suitable for engineers working on gas appliances and systems in domestic properties, including domestic boilers, central heating and hot water systems, and gas cooking appliances.
