Becoming a domestic gas engineer via an apprenticeship is a strong career choice for many reasons. It provides a clear route to a respected and stable trade, and provides you with the opportunity to earn while you learn to become a qualified gas engineer.

Gas engineering skills you'll gain

During your apprenticeship, you’ll not only gain the technical skills needed to become a competent and qualified gas engineer, but you’ll also benefit from learning key safety and compliance skills, problem-solving, customer service, career building and gain professional workplace experience.

 

Technical skills

  • Gas appliance installation – domestic gas boilers, water heaters, domestic cooking appliances and unvented hot water systems.
  • Servicing and maintenance – routine checks, cleaning components, and replacing parts.
  • Fault-finding and diagnostics – identifying issues safely and efficiently.
  • Pipework and plumbing skills – cutting, bending, joining, and testing pipework.
  • Electrical awareness – basic wiring, safety checks, and understanding control systems.
  • Using tools and equipment correctly and safely.

Transferable skills

  • Gas safety knowledge – combustion, ventilation, flueing, carbon monoxide risks.

  • Using tools and equipment correctly and safely.
  • Risk assessments and safe working practices.
  • Building confidence, professionalism, and responsibility.

Funding & How it works

This Domestic Gas Engineer Apprenticeship is fully funded for those aged under 21. If you’re over 21 years of age, then you’ll receive 95% of the funding, with the rest paid by your employer.

What you'll learn

You'll work towards four domestic gas appliances during the apprenticeship. This usually covers:

  • Gas boilers
  • Water heaters
  • Cooking appliances
  • Unvented hot water systems

You'll also complete your ACS qualifications for CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, Unvented, Optional HTR1 (Domestic gas fires) instead of cookers if required.
