The Level 3 Domestic Gas Engineer apprenticeship lasts 18 months, with the end point assessment taking place in the final 3 months of the apprenticeship. 

The apprenticeship features 20% “off-the-job” training (at our training centre in Stockport) and 80% on-the-job, working with your employer. Apprentices attend our centre in “block weeks”, which is typically five days in the centre once every 6-8 weeks.

You’ll train for four main appliance categories, typically: domestic gas boilers & water heaters, domestic cooking appliances, and unvented hot-water systems. You may also cover domestic gas fires (as an optional module).

You'll work toward the relevant ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) qualifications: e.g. CCN1 (core domestic gas safety), CENWAT (boilers and water heaters), CKR1, Unvented, and optional HTR1 (if covering gas fires) or cooking-appliance equivalents. After successful completion, you’re eligible to apply to join the Gas Safe Register, which is required for legal work on gas appliances in the UK.

You don’t need previous trade qualifications, although we’d suggest that a reasonable level of English and Maths is sufficient. Some employers may also look for a clean driving licence. You’ll also need to be legally eligible to work in the UK.

After successful completion and required assessments, you can apply to join the Gas Safe Register and optionally, the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM).
