The AI Leadership: Strategy & Opportunity Apprenticeship Unit (AU0009) is ideal for those in leadership roles responsible for setting direction, governance and oversight for AI use, who need upskilling in AI leadership literacy.

This Level 5 programme is particularly relevant for those businesses at an early stage of AI adoption, where there's a need to build initial understanding and identify relevant opportunities.

By completing the AI Leadership: Strategy & Opportunity Apprenticeship Unit, learners will develop the capability to:

    • Set AI policy and strategy. 
    • Evaluate opportunities for AI-driven improvement using qualitative and quantitative evidence.
    • Define, document and communicate an AI strategy aligned to organisational goals, values and risk appetite.
    • Assess viability and risk through AI use cases and pilots.
    • Engage stakeholders to build support for AI strategy and adoption.
    • Critically evaluate and monitor. Implementing adaptations, including responses to emerging AI technologies and trends.

  • How to assess the viability of solutions when making acquisition decisions.
  • Principles and application of testing methodologies and their application in practice.
  • Principles of human oversight and human AI collaboration to achieve shared outcomes.

Funding & How it works

  • Large employers (pay bill over £3m) contribute 0.5% of payroll into the levy
  • This money is held in a digital apprenticeship account
  • From April 2026, these funds can be used for both:
    • Apprenticeships
    • Apprenticeship Units (short courses)

If you already use the apprenticeship levy, you’ll use the same pot of money for Apprenticeship Units

Core Workshops

Skills test & assessment 

Learners are assessed through a provider-led skills test, comprising:

  • A portfolio of applied organisational artefacts, including:
    • AI strategy and use case prioritisation
    • AI investment and procurement case
    • Governance, risk and assurance framework
    • Delivery and workforce impact plan
  • A professional discussion to validate leadership judgement and application

This approach confirms real occupational competence rather than academic knowledge recall.

Progression Routes 

On completion, learners can progress into or strengthen roles such as:

  • Senior manager or director with AI accountability
  • Transformation, digital or operations leader
  • Responsible AI, governance or risk sponsor
  • Programme or portfolio sponsor for AI initiatives

The unit also supports progression to Level 6 digital or data apprenticeships, or further executive-level AI development.
