Apprenticeship Units

From April 2026, the UK government will introduce Apprenticeship Units through the Growth and Skills Levy.

These short, flexible training modules will allow you to use levy funding for targeted skills development, without enrolling your employees into full apprenticeships.

For organisations dealing with skills shortages, digital transformation, and net-zero transition, Apprenticeship Units provide a faster way to upskill your workforce.

  • Funded via the Growth & Skills Levy

    • Shorter than a traditional apprenticeship

      • For existing employees aged 19+

Shorter courses

Apprenticeship Units are typically much shorter than a traditional apprenticeship and can last weeks or just a few months.

Job-specific

The first Apprenticeship Units announced are focused on job-specific skills in digital, construction and renewable energy.

For existing staff

Apprenticeship Units are designed for your existing employees (aged 19+) to upskill them in key areas relevant to your business.

How do I access Apprenticeship Unit funding?

Apprenticeship Units are funded via the Growth and Skills Levy.

  • Large employers (pay bill over £3m) contribute 0.5% of payroll into the levy
  • This money is held in a digital apprenticeship account
  • From April 2026, these funds can be used for both:
    • Apprenticeships
    • Apprenticeship Units (short courses)

If you already use the apprenticeship levy, you’ll use the same pot of money for Apprenticeship Units.

Eligibility for candidates:

  • Aged 19+

  • Live in England

  • Eligible to work in the UK

  • Current employee of your business
