From AI awareness, to business advantage

The rapid evolution of AI means employers need to look beyond training employees to use today’s tools and focus on building the adaptability required for future technologies.

Discussions with employers have highlighted four consistent priorities:

  • Embedding AI capability across occupational pathways and aligning learning with business objectives.

  • Creating clear AI progression routes from awareness to confident workplace application.

  • Balancing productivity gains with critical thinking and professional judgement.

  • Ensuring workforce development keeps pace with technological change.

These priorities shape our approach to AI apprenticeships, helping organisations build AI capability that enable employees to use AI responsibly to gain productivity, enhance decision-making and performance while preparing for future skills demands.

Do you know which roles in your organisation will require AI capability in the next 12 months?

AI as a strategic enabler

Luke Muscat, Group CEO

AI is steadily reshaping businesses across the training and education sector and the wider economy.

No longer a buzzword, organisations of all sizes are recognising its potential; those that embrace it are likely to prosper, while those that don't may struggle to compete in the coming years.

At Leep Group, AI presents significant opportunities to enhance learner engagement, optimise operations, and deliver smarter, data-driven training aligned to employer needs.

However, it also introduces risks around data security, ethical use, and the need to upskill staff.

Our main aim is to continue to embrace innovation while maintaining robust governance and ensuring AI enhances human capability rather than replacing it.

Dan Petrusow, Head of Curriculum

My goal has been to standardise and centralise curriculum development, ensuring consistency, quality and alignment across all programmes.

Employer feedback is particularly important for our team, as it helps us identify emerging skills requirements and directly shaping what we build and how we improve it.

My passion for technology comes from a long-standing curiosity about how data, technology and automation can improve outcomes, and from seeing first-hand how technological innovation can transform services, support better decision-making and create meaningful impact.

Skills Bootcamps: Skills for work

As AI continues to influence how organisations operate, employers are placing greater emphasis
on developing digital skills that enable employees to use technology effectively, responsibly, and securely.

In response to these changing skills requirements, we're embedding AI learning across our digital programmes to help learners develop practical, workplace-relevant capability.

Within the Cybersecurity Technician Skills Bootcamp, learners explore areas including AI-enabled threat detection, automation, and the evolving security considerations associated with generative AI.

AI is also incorporated into the Data & AI Skills Bootcamp and the redesigned Digital & IT Skills programme, where learners gain experience using AI tools, improving digital productivity, and understanding responsible approaches to adoption.

By continuing to evolve digital learning provision alongside employer needs, we aim to support organisations in developing employees who can adapt to changing technologies and apply new tools effectively within their roles.

Learner story

Ausarina Indequi, IT Client Relationship Manager

Ausarina was a learner on our Skills Bootcamp in IT Technician programme. Speaking to us after completing the programme, she said:

"I recently made the decision to transition from my role as a Document Controller in the energy sector to the tech industry, after recognising the significant benefits and opportunities it offers.

"The bootcamp has been instrumental in equipping me with the foundational skills and hands-on experience required to excel in my current role as IT Client Relationship Manager."

Adult skills

We have also expanded our Adult Skills Fund digital provision through a redesigned Digital & IT Skills programme, with a focus on building the digital confidence and AI awareness needed for today’s changing workplace.

The programme provides learners with an accessible pathway to develop practical digital skills, understand workplace applications of AI, and progress towards higher-level technical training where appropriate.

As AI continues to influence skills requirements across sectors, we're continuing to monitor changes in national skills policy and employer priorities.

This includes exploring how future provision can support organisations in developing digital capability, improving workforce adaptability, and enabling employees to engage with emerging technologies in a responsible and effective way.

89.5%

Introducing: AI Apprenticeship Units

AI is developing quickly, and businesses need a more flexible way to keep their teams’ skills up to date. Traditional apprenticeship programmes can take years, making it harder to respond quickly to new skills needs.

That’s why we’ve introduced modular AI Apprenticeship Units. These flexible, accredited units allow employers to focus on specific skills their teams need, including AI and digital skills, without committing to a full apprenticeship programme.

Apprenticeship Units can help employers tackle skills gaps, upskill existing teams and make better use of their apprenticeship levy. They provide a practical way to build the skills needed as business needs change, helping organisations improve productivity, support innovation and stay competitive.

This is particularly important as employers face common barriers to AI upskilling, including uncertainty about the right training, lack of time and cost.

Apprenticeship Units offer a simpler, more flexible way to develop the skills your business needs, when you need them.

Creating opportunity for everyone

Bea Mancinelli, East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

AI is rapidly evolving across the NHS, moving from simple automation and information retrieval, towards supporting clinical decision-making, operational efficiency, workforce planning, and learning.

Across the Trust, AI is already reducing administrative burden, improving access to knowledge, and enabling more efficient ways of working, with opportunities to personalise learning, support apprentices and automate routine tasks.

As AI becomes more capable of coordinating processes and
completing tasks, it has the potential to improve productivity and release staff time for patient care.

However, adoption must be underpinned by strong governance, quality data and human oversight.
