Is this Skills Bootcamp right for me? 

The Smart Metering Skills Bootcamp is suited to those looking to gain employment working as a smart meter installer. The programme offers you CMA3, MET1 equivalence, EUSR registration for single-phase electrics, and eligibility for Gas Safe registration, meaning you’ll be qualified for several key entry-level and mid-level smart metering roles on completion.

Smart metering skills you'll gain

During the Smart Metering skills bootcamp, you’ll not only gain the technical skills needed to become a competent and qualified engineer, but you’ll also benefit from learning key safety and compliance skills, problem-solving, customer service, career building and gain professional workplace experience.

Technical skills

  • Gas and electrical theories and procedures involved in the practical application of installation, exchange, commission, decommission and maintenance of smart metering systems.
  • Knowledge of how to carry out thorough risk assessments.
  • Gas and electrical testing and assessment.
  • Install communication systems for smart meters.
  • Decommissioning, installation and testing of gas and single phase electric smart meters.
  • Tightness testing and direct purging of gas meters.

 

Transferable skills

  • Using tools, PPE and equipment correctly and safely.
  • Being risk aware and maintaining compliance with appropriate rules and regulations.
  • Professional behaviour, personal wellbeing and the safety of others as a priority.
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and regulations applicable to work in the gas and power industries.
  • Be energy aware and deliver advice to customers with a polite, courteous professional service.

Funding & How it works

Our Skills Bootcamps are funded by the UK government, meaning they’re available at no cost to learners providing you meet our eligibility criteria.

For employers, you’ll pay a small portion of the costs, which is often 10% for small/medium-sized businesses (SMEs with fewer than 250 employees), or 30% for larger employers.

Smart Metering Skills Bootcamp - Programme overview

The Smart Metering Skills Bootcamp includes 6 weeks in-centre training at our centre in Stockport, with two weeks dedicated to Power (electrical meters) and four weeks on Gas.

This is then followed by 10 weeks of in-field mentoring, where you’ll work alongside an existing engineer to complete an online portfolio of work.

Upon successful completion of the mentoring phase, you can then be registered for the qualification. This delivers CMA3 and Met 1 equivalence valid for three years.

You’ll also be EUSR registered for single phase electrics and will be entered onto the gas safe system for you to register.
